The arrival of a new year is often a time for looking ahead: making resolutions, identifying needs or values to live by, choosing theme words to give focus, and planning for activities and trips we want to make happen. I intend to do a few of these and enjoy envisioning my life in a larger context than the day-to-day.
I’ve also been thinking back on this year and recalling meaningful events. I asked folks in a practice group to picture an experience this year that was important to them, and then share it with the group. We each talked about a specific incident and described it, and the feelings and needs connected with it. For some, the memories were fond; for others, they were of more challenging times that resulted in significant growth and learning.
Life flies by and many important moments can be forgotten. At 75, I’m very aware of this! I invite you to look back on the year and pick out experiences you want to carry with you: learnings, sensations, beauty, growth, love, fun, etc. Perhaps write them down and begin (or continue) a tradition to honor these occasions. Feel the feelings and celebrate the needs.
Farewell to 2024 and welcome 2025! Let’s hold hands and stay in connection as we take another ride around the sun together.
